Employee welfare and development has always been a focus at Belazu. In 2019 we celebrated this with The Employer of The Year at The Grocer Gold Awards. We are proud of being a London Living Wage Employer and achieving a Gold accreditation of Investors in People. Everyone working at Belazu has their own personal development plan, which includes a foodie experience, internal and external voluntary activities, interdepartmental activities, and training to develop professional skills.
In the Spring of 2015, we launched our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, ‘The Journey Matters’ to provide fresh, goal-driven focus to our sustainability efforts. The initiative is based on three core pillars: Product, Planet and People.
It promotes positive change through sustainability and social engagement, values which have been embedded in all our processes and communication since 1991, the beginning of Belazu. To accomplish our CSR goals, we work together with our suppliers, customers and employees.
The way we do things at Belazu doesn’t always make sense. To this day we still hand mix our olives, rather than using a machine that could damage them. We make small batch Pestos with fresh basil that is grown under the Italian sunshine, not basil that is grown in polytunnels. Our quest for the best flavour, ingredients and suppliers means we don’t always take the simplest, or cheapest option, which can seem at odds with a traditional business mentality.
What does make sense to us is that business can be used as a force for good. From the moment our co-founder George came back across the channel with a van full of olives and big dreams, sustainability and social engagement have always been weaved into our business goals. So, it is with much excitement that we have joined the B-Corp™ community as a company who meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance.
